Later this month we will host a webinar with HMRC to answer all your questions on Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. One not to be missed, this is your opportunity to understand fact from fiction, plot a clear roadmap ahead, and have help from HMRC to move forward with clarity and confidence. Put Tuesday 24th September in your diary.
The webinar will be led by HMRC representative, Lenny Barry. With a 40 year career with HM Customs and Excise and HM Revenue and Customs, Lenny brings his extensive experience and sector knowledge to the table. For the past six years, Lenny has worked on the Making Tax Digital programme, firstly for VAT and then Income Tax.
His current role predominantly focuses on external agent engagement, helping accountants and clients come to terms with MTD requirements. He has already guided countless agents through the process with clear information and instructions – so webinar attendees will be in good hands.
Lenny will ensure that this session will be both insightful and practical, by defining the timelines involved and providing clear information on what is involved in Making Tax Digital. He says, “the webinar will cover the fundamentals of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, what agents and clients need to be prepared for ahead of mandation in April 2026, and how to get involved early via the testing programme.”
The MTD journey is something that Lenny has been part of at HMRC since the outset and he will guide CPAA members through the next stage. “Having delivered MTD for VAT we have moved on to MTD for Income Tax which is a much bigger, and more complicated, proposition. There have been delays, but are now firmly on track for mandation in April 2026.”
He adds, “ahead of this is the essential testing programme and we encourage all agents to consider putting at least one client into the testing programme to see what is involved. It will help them become better informed and more able to help their practice, and clients, get ready for April 2026.”
With a long lead-up to this phase of the MTD roll out, there have understandably been rumours and misconceptions flying around – so another useful part of the seminar will be the ability for Lenny to debunk these and set the record straight.
“There are many myths! People don’t believe that 2006 will happen, but it will – we are well on track. People think they are doing five tax returns, they are not. The quarterly updates are simply summary totals of income and expenditure for their trade. By keeping accurate digital records, in good time, people will be prompted by their software to submit their quarterly updates, at the touch of a button.”
We also hope this session enables members to share their views, concerns and experiences too. Lenny says, “we are always interested in hearing what accountants think and feel about MTD. Some will be based on myths! Some will be due to lack of information and education, which we would hope to address. MTD will happen, and it will happen best with accountants, software developers and HMRC working together, to help and support each other.”
Valuable advice and practical guidance, straight from the horse’s mouth; this webinar is essential for members to stay a step ahead. Keep an eye out for the email to sign up for the webinar, taking place 11am on Tuesday 24th September.
